Helping Teens Become Strong Readers

Be involved in the reading process with an older child at home is the most important thing a parent/guardian can do:

Have the child tell you what they are reading

Have the child read to you their favorite part

Read in two voices

Have the child choose books for and read with younger siblings

Discuss the story/article/newspaper

Have your child borrow books on tape and listen while reading

Read all kinds of books, magazines, and newspapers

Have your child read with you materials of interest to you including government forms, bank forms, work manuals etc..

Make family literacy time!

Turn off the television, radio and computer games

Encourage writing! Letters to family, friends, teachers, and grocery lists.

Keep a journal

Visit your library often!! All kinds of books are available for free in many languages. You might consider books and songs on cassette tape as well.

Reading aloud to your child can be one of your best parenting experiences! We hope that you and your child create many loving memories as you explore children's books together.
